TYPES OF PHYSIOTHERAPY TREATMENT
I specialise in the physiotherapy treatment of musculoskeletal / orthopaedic conditions. These are problems with the muscles, bones and joints of the body and are often caused by injuries, overuse, posture, or the result of ‘wear and tear’ from getting older.
I don’t work in other branches of physiotherapy – such as neurological or respiratory conditions, for example – so if you are looking for a physio to treat those kind of problems I suggest searching with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy here.
PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSESSMENT
Your first physiotherapy session will be an assessment. This will be similar to any other medical assessment you may have had, with a discussion regarding your current problem and how it is affecting you, your occupation, hobbies and home life, as well as your other relevant medical history and any medication you might be taking.
Following this you will have an examination to see how you move with special tests performed on the affected areas to check different structures, as well as checking muscle strength and sensation.
After this we will discuss the problems I’ve identified and discuss a treatment plan.
It’s probably a good idea to wear loose fitting clothing so you can move easily without restriction during your examination.
TREATMENT
Treatment begins at your first session, and I will discuss with you the options available, which include rehabilitation exercise such as stretching and strengthening, manual therapy and manipulation, postural and pacing advice to avoid flare-ups as well as lifestyle modifications to look at the cause of the problem.
